There's a tendency in plant care to look outward for more โ more plants, more cuttings, more acquisitions. But some of the most satisfying growth comes from plants you've already had for years, once you understand how to unlock what they're holding back.
Most established houseplants are carrying dormant nodes along their stems โ potential growth points that haven't activated because the conditions haven't called for them. Learning to read those nodes and encourage them to break is one of the more rewarding practices in long-term plant care.
Why Plants Hold Back
The primary reason dormant nodes stay dormant on an established plant is apical dominance: the main growing tip produces hormones that suppress lateral growth. The plant's energy flows upward, toward the newest leaves, and the nodes below sit waiting.
This serves the plant in nature โ growing tall and climbing quickly toward light is survival strategy. But in your home, a tall, leggy plant with bare lower stems isn't necessarily what you want. You may want a fuller, bushier plant that uses those dormant nodes along the way.
Technique 1: Strategic Pruning
The most reliable way to encourage dormant nodes on an established plant is to remove the apical growing tip. Cut the main stem just above a node โ the node you cut above will typically be among the first to produce a new shoot, and nodes further down the stem will also begin to activate as the hormonal suppression lifts.
This is the basis of "pinching" on vining plants like pothos and philodendrons: pinching out the growing tip redirects energy and makes the plant branch. Done consistently over time, it's the difference between a single long vine and a full, dense trailing plant.
Technique 2: Training and Direction
On climbing plants, directing the stems horizontally rather than allowing them to grow vertically changes the hormonal gradient and encourages lateral branching. Training a monstera or philodendron horizontally along a shelf, or allowing a pothos to cascade downward from an elevated position, can activate nodes that would otherwise remain dormant on an upward-climbing stem.
Technique 3: Direct Node Activation
For specific dormant nodes on an established plant โ particularly bare sections of older stems that you want to fill back in โ direct application of a concentrated activator is the most targeted approach.

Technique 4: Moss Pole and Vertical Support
For climbing aroids, providing a proper vertical support โ a moss pole, coco coir pole, or plank โ encourages the plant to produce larger leaves and stronger internodal growth. Aerial roots attaching to the pole trigger the same hormonal shift that climbing a tree would in nature, and nodes along the climbing stem become more active as the plant enters its mature climbing growth pattern.
Reading Your Plant
Before applying any technique, look at your plant carefully. Where are the dormant nodes? Which sections of stem are bare that you'd like to see fill in? Which direction is the plant naturally growing, and what does redirecting that growth require?
The interventions above โ pruning, training, direct activation โ all work by changing something about the plant's environment or hormonal balance. Understanding which approach addresses the specific reason a node is dormant makes each intervention more intentional and more likely to succeed.
The plant already has everything it needs to produce more growth. Your job is to create the conditions for that growth to begin.
