You've seen it happen: a cutting sits in water for weeks, and the node doesn't seem to be doing anything. Or a plant you've had for years suddenly produces a new shoot from a node that looked completely inert. Dormant nodes are not dead nodes. They're waiting.
Understanding what dormant nodes are waiting for โ and how to provide it โ is one of the most useful skills in plant care.
Why Nodes Go Dormant
Most plants exhibit a phenomenon called apical dominance: the growing tip (the apical bud, at the top of the plant) produces hormones that suppress the growth of lower buds. As long as the apical bud is active and healthy, the nodes below it stay dormant. The plant is directing its energy upward.
This is why trimming the tip of a bushy plant encourages it to branch. Remove the apical bud and the suppression lifts. Energy redirects to the nodes below and side shoots begin to emerge.
In the context of propagation, dormant nodes are common because the cutting no longer has an active apical bud to direct energy โ but it also hasn't received enough signal to begin root or shoot production at the node itself.
Method 1: Remove Apical Dominance
On an established plant (not a cutting), the simplest way to activate dormant nodes is to cut back the main growing tip. This immediately redirects auxin flow and typically results in two or more side shoots emerging from nodes below the cut within a few weeks.
This technique is the basis of most plant "pruning for fullness" advice. It works because it directly addresses the hormonal suppression that was keeping those nodes dormant.
Method 2: Light and Temperature Adjustment
Some dormant nodes are waiting for seasonal cues. In their native environments, many tropical plants respond to increased light intensity and slightly warmer temperatures by breaking dormancy and producing new growth. Moving a plant to a brighter location โ or from a cool windowsill to a warmer interior spot in winter โ can be enough to trigger activity.
This works more slowly than other methods, but it's the gentlest and appropriate for plants that aren't candidates for pruning or paste application.
Method 3: Humidity and Wound Signaling
Nodes that have aerial roots or existing root nubs are often more responsive to humidity than bare nodes. Occasionally a node is genuinely dead โ damaged by rot, severe desiccation, or physical trauma. A dead node won't respond to any activation method. Signs of a dead node include blackened or mushy tissue, complete desiccation with no green at all, or the node crumbling when touched. In this case, no amount of paste, humidity, or light will produce growth. Move to the next node on the stem or take a fresh cutting.
