The cutting has been in water for weeks. There are roots. But how do you know when those roots are ready โ when it's actually time to make the move to soil?
Transferring too early means the plant doesn't have enough root infrastructure to sustain itself. Transferring too late means you've allowed roots to become deeply adapted to water, making the soil transition more difficult. The window isn't narrow, but knowing what to look for makes the decision much easier.
What "Ready" Actually Looks Like
There are three things to assess before transferring any cutting from water to soil.
Root Length: 1โ2 Inches Minimum
The main roots emerging from the node should be at least 1 inch long, and ideally closer to 2. This length indicates that the root cells are actively dividing and that the plant has enough stored energy to survive the transition.
Roots under an inch are technically present, but they're still in an early, fragile phase. A cutting transferred at this stage may survive โ but it's taking on more stress than necessary.
Root Architecture: Look for Feeder Roots
Healthy, transfer-ready roots don't just grow long โ they branch. You're looking for secondary roots: smaller, hair-like projections coming off the main root threads. These feeder roots are what will actually anchor in soil and begin drawing water and nutrients.
A single long root with no branching is a sign the cutting is still in the early phase. A network of roots with visible secondary structure is the green light.
No Signs of Rot or Stem Damage
Before transferring, check the stem at and below the waterline. Healthy stems are firm and their original color. Soft, dark, or mushy sections indicate bacterial rot. A cutting with rot at the base will struggle in soil regardless of how developed the roots appear โ address the rot first (trim the affected section with a clean blade) or take a fresh cutting from the parent plant.

How to Make the Transfer
Once the cutting is ready, the transfer itself is straightforward โ but a few details matter.
Choose a well-draining potting mix appropriate for the species. For most tropical aroids, a chunky mix with perlite or bark is ideal. Make a hole in the center of the mix, lower the cutting in gently (water roots are delicate and will snap if forced), and firm the soil lightly around the stem.
Water thoroughly immediately after potting. Then keep the soil consistently moist โ not wet, not dry โ for the first two weeks while the roots adapt to their new environment.
Place the newly potted cutting in bright indirect light. Avoid direct sun for the first 2โ3 weeks. The plant is managing a significant physiological shift; reducing stress elsewhere gives it space to adapt.
What to Expect
Some wilt in the first few days after transfer is normal. The roots are adjusting from aquatic to terrestrial function. As long as the stem remains firm and the soil stays appropriately moist, this is temporary. Within 1โ2 weeks, you'll typically see new leaf growth โ the sign that the cutting has fully established itself as a plant.
