There's something quietly meditative about a glass jar on a windowsill, a cutting suspended in water, and the slow, patient process of watching roots emerge. Water propagation is one of the oldest forms of plant care — and one of the most satisfying. It requires very little and rewards you with an entirely new plant.

What Is Water Propagation?
Water propagation is the process of taking a cutting from a healthy plant and encouraging it to grow roots while suspended in water. Once a strong root system develops, the cutting can be transferred to soil where it will grow into a fully independent plant.
It works because most tropical houseplants — the aroids, pothos, philodendrons, and many others — are remarkably adaptable. Given the right conditions, a single cutting will redirect its energy toward root development, sensing that it needs to anchor itself and find nutrients.
What You'll Need
- A healthy parent plant with multiple nodes
- Clean scissors or pruning shears (sterilize with rubbing alcohol first)
- A clear glass or vessel (glass lets you observe root progress)
- Filtered water, or tap water left out for a few hours to off-gas chlorine
- Bright, indirect light
Step 1: Choose Your Cutting
A good cutting is 4–6 inches long and includes at least one node — the small bump or joint on the stem where roots emerge. Without a node, the cutting cannot root. Aerial roots or tiny nubs along the stem are also a good sign.
Take your cutting just below a node, using a clean diagonal cut. Remove any leaves that would sit beneath the waterline — submerged leaves will rot and cloud the water.
Step 2: Place in Water
Fill your vessel with room-temperature water and submerge the cutting so the node is fully underwater. The leaves should stay above the waterline. A narrow-necked vessel or jar works well for this — it suspends the stem naturally without needing additional support.
Place the vessel in a spot with bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sun, which heats the water and promotes algae growth.
Step 3: Support the Rooting Process
This is where most beginner propagations stall. Water alone provides hydration, but it doesn't offer the biological signals roots need to initiate growth. Adding 5–10 drops of Plantiqo Enrich Propagation Drops to the water changes that.

Propagation is not instant. Most cuttings take 2–6 weeks to show meaningful root development, depending on the species, season, and light. The work is mostly done by the plant — your job is to create the right conditions and then step back.
