You took the cutting. You set it in water. You waited. And nothing happened.
Propagation failure is frustrating precisely because it feels mysterious. The cutting looks fine. The water looks fine. But weeks pass and there's still no sign of roots.
The good news: most propagation failures have a specific cause โ and a specific fix. Here are the five most common reasons cuttings refuse to root, and what to do about each one.
1. The Cutting Has No Node
This is the single most common mistake. A node is the point on a plant's stem where roots can emerge โ a small bump, ring, or joint. Without one, a cutting is biologically incapable of producing roots, no matter how long you wait.
The fix: Before placing any cutting in water, locate a node and make your cut just below it. If you can't find a node, the stem section you have won't root. Go back to the parent plant and take a new cutting.
2. Too Much Stem Above the Waterline
The node โ the area where roots will form โ must be submerged. If your cutting is sitting too high in the vessel, or if the node has dried out above the waterline, root initiation won't happen.
The fix: Adjust your cutting or your water level so the node is fully submerged. At least one inch of stem below the node should be underwater. Leaves should remain above the surface.
3. The Water Isn't Being Changed
Still, stagnant water becomes oxygen-depleted and bacteria-rich. That environment signals stress to the cutting, and not the productive kind โ the kind that causes stem rot instead of root growth.
The fix: Change the water every 5โ7 days. Use room-temperature filtered water, or tap water left out overnight to allow chlorine to dissipate. Each water change is also an opportunity to refresh any rooting support you're adding to the vessel.
4. The Light Is Wrong
Cuttings need light to fuel the energy-intensive process of root production. But too much direct sun heats the water, promotes algae, and stresses the cutting before it has any roots to draw water from.
The fix: Find a spot with consistent bright, indirect light. A north- or east-facing window is often ideal. Avoid placing cuttings in dark corners or on sun-drenched south-facing sills.
5. Nothing Is Supporting Root Initiation
Water keeps the cutting alive. It doesn't tell the cutting to root. Root initiation requires specific biological signals โ primarily auxins like IBA (indole-3-butyric acid) โ that prompt the plant's cells to differentiate into root tissue.
In soil, those signals come from the growing medium itself. In water, the cutting is on its own unless you add support.

Even a healthy cutting in perfect conditions takes time. Most tropical plants show meaningful root development in 2โ4 weeks; some slower-growing species can take 6 or more. If you've addressed all five factors above and still see no roots after 8 weeks, take a fresh cutting from the parent plant and start again.
Propagation is a practice. Each attempt teaches you something about the plant โ and eventually, the roots always come.
