Water propagation looks simple: cut a stem, put it in a jar, wait for roots. And often it is. But when cuttings rot, stall, or slowly fade, it's almost always one of a few predictable mistakes. Avoid these and your success rate jumps dramatically.

Mistake 1: No Node in the Water

Roots grow from nodes โ€” the points where leaves and stems meet โ€” not from random spots on a stem or from leaves. If there's no node submerged, there's nothing to root. Always make your cut just below a node and ensure that node sits in the water.

Mistake 2: Leaves Submerged

Any leaf sitting in water will rot, and that rot fouls the water and threatens the whole cutting. Strip the lower leaves so only the node and bare stem are submerged, keeping the upper leaves above the waterline.

Mistake 3: Never Changing the Water

Stagnant water loses oxygen and grows bacteria, both of which cause rot and stall rooting. Refresh the water every 3โ€“4 days. Clean, oxygen-rich water is one of the biggest factors in fast, healthy roots.

Mistake 4: Overdosing Nutrients

Adding too much rooting product or fertilizer backfires โ€” excess nutrients feed bacteria and algae, clouding the water and endangering the cutting. If you use a propagation aid like Plantiqo Enrich Propagation Drops, dose lightly (a few drops per cup, a drop or two for small tubes) and refresh regularly. Less is genuinely more.

Mistake 5: Too Much Direct Sun

Direct sunlight overheats the water and grows algae. Cuttings root best in bright, indirect light โ€” enough energy to grow, without cooking the jar.

Mistake 6: Impatience

Different plants root at very different speeds. Pulling a cutting out to "check" constantly, or giving up too early, disrupts the process. Set it in a good spot, maintain clean water, and let it work.

Get the Basics Right

Node submerged, leaves above water, fresh water every few days, light dosing, bright indirect light, and patience. Nail those six and most cuttings will root reliably. Propagation failures are rarely bad luck โ€” they're almost always one of these fixable mistakes.
